When I was a girl, I had the biggest hopes and dreams,
I’d climb every mountain and bathe in the streams.
I would work hard every day buy a car and be free.
Then stand tall on my own for the whole world to see.
But life came along and knocked me down a few pegs.
It was hard to be alone with nothing firm under my legs.
When I was still young, merely fifteen,
I gave birth to a child, a boy it would seem.
Everyone tried to tell me, the right and wrong way,
To raise my son and build a life, like I had nothing to say.
I put my foot down strong and firm from the start.
Who were they to tell me what I felt in my heart?
When I was young, my whole world shifted.
Everything changed with the son I’d been gifted.
All my goals and my dreams were now for my son
He had to come first before everything and everyone
I knew I would struggle and sometimes slip and fall.
But I would get up every time and learn from it all.
